Angélica Serech Pach'un Q'ijul (Temps entrelacés - Deep time)

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum is hosting the first European solo show of Angélica Serech (b. 1982), an artist of Maya Kaqchikel origin born in Guatemala. Entitled Pach’un Q’ijul (Temps entrelacés/Deep Time), it sets up a dialogue between the artist’s recent works and objects from the Museum’s collection.

In her experimental and intuitive practice, Serech uses self-built looms to intertwine ancestral techniques with her own history – including her experience of the Guatemalan Civil War. Her works represent both a tribute to her cultural heritage and an exploration of the restorative power of artistic creation. Weaving together individual and collective memory, the exhibition delves deep into the relationship between textiles and humanitarian action.

About the artist

Angélica Serech

Angélica Serech was born in 1982 in San Juan Comalapa, during the civil war, one of the most violent and tragic conflicts in Latin America's contemporary history.

During the dictatorship of General Efraín Ríos Montt, the 1980s were marked by large-scale massacres, resulting in the deaths of approximately 200,000 people, mainly from Indigenous communities.

Angélica Serech’s early years are inseparable from this Guatemalan genocide. It was within her family, alongside her mother and grandmother, that she learned the art of weaving—an ancestral skill they preserved not only as a form of resistance but also as an act of survival in the face of pervasive violence.

The artist quickly developed a unique technique, pushing the boundaries of traditional weaving. She moved away from conventional methods and used natural materials such as corn husks and tree branches, which she transformed with unmatched creativity. She sought to give birth to a new aesthetic, one that is both resilient and deeply rooted in her cultural history.

Recognized internationally, Angélica Serech has exhibited at the JUANNIO auction editions (2020, 2021, and 2022), the 22nd Paiz Art Biennale (2021) in Guatemala, as well as in group exhibitions at Galería Extra (2021), La Galería Rebelde (2022), La Collective in Paris (2023), the 14th Gwangju Biennale (South Korea, 2023), and the 15th Toronto Biennale (2024).
