Building together: art and humanitarianism face the challenges of collective action

Conceived as a space for exchange and learning, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum selects each year a theme that reflects current issues at the intersection of the humanitarian, artistic, and museum sectors. For each theme, a leading academic with expertise in the chosen topic is invited to engage with the public through workshops, masterclasses, and discussions.

These annual themes are designed to foster collective reflection on the role of museums in relation to their audiences, while encouraging critical thinking about museum and cultural practices. Each thematic year concludes with the publication of a toolkit, a practical PDF guide that brings together the ten key insights emerging from the discussions and activities held throughout the year. These toolkits are intended as practical resources for museum professionals, offering a concise synthesis of the knowledge and lessons developed during the process.

Since 2022, the Museum has explored four themes: feminism, mental health, digital dilemmas, and co-creation. All toolkits are available free of charge and are accessible to everyone.

This year, and through to 2028, the Museum's teams are focusing on the transformation of the permanent exhibition. This major project builds on the "Co-creation" thematic year and extends the reflections initiated through previous editions by reimagining the exhibition in dialogue with the Museum's public.
